EUCRYPHIA:
SPECIES DESCRIPTION: Striking ornamental tree. Semi-evergreen growing to around 15m. Glossy dark green leaves which partially drop in cold winter conditions. Spectacular displays of white flowers in August which cover the tree and are attractive to bees and insects. This hybrid is a cross between E. cordifolia (Chile/Argentina) and E. glutinosa (Chile).
CULTIVATION: Prefers moist, lime-free soil with a sunny aspect but will tolerate semi-shade and a little lime. It is hardy but grows best when sheltered from cold winds. However it is deep rooting and has resisted many gales in my garden where other trees have been blown over. Propagation is by seed in spring or by cuttings taken summer to mid autumn. Sometimes self-sown seedlings appear near the parent tree.
