SPECIES DESCRIPTION: Large and distinctive butterfly with 4 large eye spots. Common all over the British Isles, more common in the south. Sleeps through the winter as an adult butterfly in hollow trees, buildings or any dry sheltered place.Emerges in early spring when it mates. Olive green eggs are laid on stinging nettles and hatch into black spiny larvae. These grow en masse inside a silky web until July when they separate and pupate.The butterflies emerge in July.
