Family: Thomisidae
Misumena vatia
Crab Spider, White Death Spider
MISUMENA:
SPECIES DESCRIPTION: Common in the South of England and Wales. Females are most frequently seen, being up to 10cm across and often bright yellow all over although colour is variable ranging from various shades of yellow to white or pale green. The spider is able to change its colour over a few days to camouflage itself to a particular flower species. The male is about half the size of the female. The crab spider does not build a web but waits in ambush on flowers for visiting insects and pounces on them, holding them with their front legs. The female often has two or more brownish or orange lateral stripes. The markings are very variable.
