PHALLUS:
SPECIES DESCRIPTION: This distinctive fungus is usually first detected by its foetid smell. The phallus-like fruiting body starts its growth as a greyish-white coloured egg, half buried in the ground. When cut open this reveals a layer of foul smelling jelly. When the conditions are right, a spongy white shaft erupts from the egg. It has a slimy, olive-green coloured bell-shaped top. Spores are released from this and are carried on the legs of flies which are attracted to the smell.
