TRIFOLIUM: 300+ genera and 5500+ species. Herbaceous or sometimes shrubs, trees or climbers. Leaves simple (Runner Bean) or (most usually) compound, trifoliate (as in clover) or pinnate (eg Laburnum) , sometimes terminated by a tendril (vetches). Characteristic pea type flower bilaterally symmetrical with large top petal (standard), 2 lateral petals (wings) and 2 lower petals forming the keel. Seeds in pods, often large eg Peas and Beans.

SPECIES DESCRIPTION: A perennial with trifoliate leaves and pink to red flowers. Often planted as a component of pasture and forage mixes. Naturalised throughout the British Isles in grassy places such as lawns, fields, and orchards.
