Family: Tropaeolaceae
Tropaeolum speciosum
Flame flower

TROPAEOLUM: A genus of South American plants including the common nasturtium. Some species have tuberous or rhizomatous rootstocks. The bright flowers of quaint shapes are usually freely produced on long stalks and the rapid growth of many of the climbers makes the Tropaeolum a useful and decorative plant for the garden.

SPECIES DESCRIPTION: Spectacular climber/scrambler with intense red nasturtium like flowers set off perfectly by blue green 5-lobed leaves. Flowers from June until the first frosts. In autumn maroon fruits split to expose bright blue seeds. Best planted in the shelter of an evergreen shrub for winter protection. Height up to 3m.

CULTIVATION: Can be grown from seed, though extremely difficult and not recommended. Prefers moist acid soil in a semi-shady position. Plant with roots in moist but well drained shady soil where shoots can climb into the sun.
